Career of Matthias C. Meyer
Matthias C. Meyer, born August 13, 1950 in Berne, Switzerland, has a long professional experience.
He had his professional education at the famous Ecole hôtelière de Lausanne between 1969 and 1972. After several initial experiences, he joined NUR – Neckermann + Reisen where he came to the destination Egypt in Winter 1977/78.
In 1979, he decided to remain in Egypt and became independent in tourism. He closely worked together with Mohammed Sadek from ISIS Travel. From 1982 to 1983, he worked for Inn Management AG in Egypt. He then was selected by the Nova-Park Group to join as Director of Marketing & Sales for their Hotel Alhamra Nova-Park, Jeddah until 1985.
Matthias C. Meyer returned back to Switzerland in 1985 and joined Hotel International Basel as Sales Manager. From 1986 until 1990 he was independently consulting various hotels in Sales & Marketing as well as Management.
From 1990 until 1992, he was involved in a project of a Nostalgic Nile Cruise Ship with the Swiss Retonio Holding AG. The project was not realized due to the first Gulf War.
From 1992 to 1993, he was selected to become General Manager of the Restaurants in SADKO Arcade in Moscow, consisting of 9 restaurants with more than 1.100 seats as well as bakery & butchery. SADKO Arcade was the first western Shopping Centre in Moscow and opening the Restaurants with more than 700 employees proved to be a very difficult task.
After his return to Switzerland, Matthias C. Meyer joined with 2 Swiss partners to build, open and operate the 79-room Hotel Arriva at Leipzig Airport in Eastern Germany. The hotel was planned, financed, built and opened in the record-period of only 10 months between November 1993 and August 1994.
From 1995 to 1997, Matthias C. Meyer was involved in several projects in Switzerland and Germany.
It was in 1997, when Matthias C. Meyer was invited to open Catherine Plaza Hotel as first of several hotels in the Sinai. The Luxor-attack and subsequent drop in tourism in Egypt made him return back to Switzerland in early 1998.
He quickly found an extraordinary challenge in joining the Polish ORBIS Hotels, a chain of 56 hotels, that have received ACCOR as main shareholder in 2000. For ORBIS Hotels, Matthias C. Meyer was involved in the openings of Hotel Zamojski in Zamosc, Hotel Mercure Opole in Opole, and Hotel Mercure Panorama, Wroclaw.
Furthermore, Matthias C. Meyer was actively involved in the re-organization of the following hotels: Novotel Poznan Centrum, Hotel Neptun, Szczecin and the former Hotel Forum, Cracow (no longer ORBIS Hotel)
Immediately after leaving ORBIS Hotels after almost 3 years, he was given the task to open the small, completely renovated Hotel Alpina Airolo.
However, in spring 2001, he faced some health-problems that resulted in adopting a slower path of activities. He therefore decided to pass his experiences to younger generations and thus was lecturing at the IHTTI – Hotel School in Neuchâtel, Switzerland Marketing as well as Project Management between 2002 and 2003.
